Automakers Expect to Add 13,000 Jobs in 2013, Mirroring Job Trends on Granted.com

Hiring in the auto sector is picking up as major manufacturers prepare for the expected summer surge of car sales. Automakers expect to add 13,000 jobs in 2013, and employment demand has been reflected in current openings for technicians and engineers on Granted.com.

After the government bailouts a few years ago, many of the key players in the auto industry have experienced a complete turnaround. Auto sales have been a strong point in the retail sector for quite some time, and as the industry heads into the summer months, auto companies are crossing their fingers that car sales will hold steady.

Current auto sales have risen rapidly enough for auto manufacturers to step up hiring and expand facilities. According to a recent report by USA Today and The Associated Press, 2013 auto sales are expected to reach 15.5 million, and automakers like Chrysler, Honda, General Motors, Mercedes-Benz, and Ford have announced plans to collectively add as many as 13,000 workers this year. Considering the time that it takes to manufacture a vehicle from start to finish, ship the car to dealerships, and finally get it into consumersâ hands, many auto makers are concerned that they will not be able to keep up with the rapid clip of consumer demand. Aggressive recruiting of engineers and manufacturing workers has been a direct response to these concerns.

The housing recovery has also had an indirect impact on auto sales. Growth in the construction sector has created an increase in sales of pick-ups and larger vehicles that are often driven on construction sites.

Auto hiring has been a consistent area of job growth over the past year. Current employment demand is for engineers, factory-line workers, technicians and programmers. As the technology that powers todayâs vehicles grows more sophisticated and complex, automakers are seeking workers with strong science and engineering backgrounds to develop the new software for the next generation of cars.

Employment growth in the auto sector was reflected in the current openings on Granted.com, a leading job site. The site listed approximately 43,000 openings in the auto sector, with over 12,000 of those positions in engineering and over 3,000 in manufacturing. Predictably, hiring was strongest in the countryâs auto manufacturing centers of Detroit and Dearborn, Michigan. Granted.com is a job search site based in Pasadena, CA. It is a part of the Employment Research Institute and owned by A. Harrison Barnes.
