Google Cuts Cellular Prices And Increases High-Speed Data

Google parent company %Alphabet ($GOOGL) is cutting the prices on its unlimited %Fi Cellular plans, while also increasing the amount of high-speed data it offers to customers.

Going forward, the Google Fi Simply Unlimited plan will cost $50 a month for one line, down from $60 per month previously. The Unlimited Plus package will cost users $65 a month for one line, down from its previous price of $70 each month.

The changes are the first price decreases for the %GoogleFi cellular plans since they debuted in 2019, according the company.

At the same time, Alphabet is providing customers of Google Fi with more high-speed data on both unlimited plans, increasing the Unlimited Plus plan to 50GB from 22GB previously, and raising the data available on the Simply Unlimited plan to 35GB from 22GB.

Google Fi says it will start throttling data after people exceed either monthly plan limit. And if people want to use their phone or laptop as a mobile hotspot, Google is adding 5GB for hotspot tethering to its Simply Unlimited plan, a feature previously only available with Unlimited Plus.

Both cellular plans also now include unlimited calls within all of North America – adding Canada and Mexico to the U.S. Google Fi’s pay-as-you-go Flexible plan is also getting free calls to Canada and Mexico.

Alphabet is aiming to compete on price and service with major U.S. cellular providers such as %Verizon ($VZ) and %AT&T ($T).

Year to date, Alphabet’s stock is down 8% at $2,665.75.
