TikTok Bans Political Fundraising On Its Platform

%TikTok is banning all %PoliticalFundraising from its social media platform ahead of the upcoming midterm %CongressionalElections in the U.S.

TikTok says the ban on political fundraising is part of its expanded elections rules that aim to limit the amount of political discourse on the platform.

In a blog post, TikTok said the company would immediately turn off all advertising and monetization features, such as gifting and tipping, for politicians and political parties.

Within the next few weeks, TikTok said it will implement a total ban on campaign fundraising. The ban will prohibit politicians and political parties from using the platform to direct users to their campaign websites or make financial contributions.

The ban on fundraising is part of a broader integrity initiative that TikTok has taken on this year. In August, TikTok announced plans to address the threat of harmful election misinformation by banning influencers from being paid for posting political content.

TikTok has also started labeling videos that contain false or unconfirmed political information.

Dozens of Republican and Democratic politicians who are running for office in the U.S. this year have launched TikTok accounts.

TikTok’s userbase is younger than many other social media sites like %Twitter ($TWTR), making it a key platform for politicians seeking support from youth voters.
