Foxconn Might Open Manufacturing Plants In The U.S. [REPORT]

Foxconn Technology Co., Ltd. (TPE:2354), one of the major suppliers of Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) products, and particularly the iPhone and iPad is planning to open manufacturing plants in the United States, according to a report from Digitimes.

The Digitimes cited information from market watchers that the Taiwanese electronics manufacturing company is currently evaluating the cities of Detroit and Los Angeles as potential sites for the plants, and its plan is to manufacture LCD TVs.

The report also noted a recent public statement of Terry Gou, chairman of Foxconn Technology Co., Ltd. (TPE:2354), which said that the company is planning to conduct a training program for engineers based in the United States. Gou said Foxxconn wants to bring the engineers to Taiwan or China to learn and take part in the design and manufacturing of the company.

Guo said, “The program will give the engineers an environment to learn the Chinese language, first-hand experience in the manufacturing process, and training that can be helpful after they return to the US.”

According to Gou, Foxconn Technology Co., Ltd. (TPE:2354) is currently discussing the details of the training program with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Last August, there were reports that Sharp was planning to sell its two TV manufacturing plants in Mexico and China to Foxconn Technology Co., Ltd. (TPE:2354). The company also considered establishing a joint venture called Sharp Display Products Corp, which will be managed by Sharp and Terry Gou.

Foxconn Technology Co., Ltd. (TPE:2354) emerged as a leading producer of electronic goods, but the company is bombarded by controversies, particularly on labor issues. Employees are complaining that the company is violating fair labor regulation and child labor laws.

In September, Foxxconn’s Taiyuan factory was under police supervision after a riot involving  thousands of workers, which prompted the company to a temporary shutdown its operation. Some workers alleged that the security guards in the plant are fierce, and they practice a gangster-style management to secure the plant. Furthermore, the employees complained about the poor working conditions in Foxconn Technology Co., Ltd. (TPE:2354) plants. According to them, dormitories are crowded and noisy, food is low quality, and sanitation is poor.

Foxxconn’s decision to open a manufacturing plant in the United States indicates that the company is willing to change its image and business operations.
