Gainers:

Toll Brothers Inc. (TOL: Quote) is rising 4 percent to $33.70. The company’s fourth quarter profit surged from the year-ago period, boosted by a net tax benefit. Revenues improved from the same period a year earlier and were above the consensus estimate. New orders increased 70 percent.

Big Lots, Inc. (BIG: Quote) is gaining 11 percent to $31.10. The company slipped to a loss in its third quarter, although the loss was narrower than what analysts’ had estimated. The company forecast fourth quarter consolidated income per share from continuing operations in-line with Wall Street view. The company also raised its earnings outlook for the full-year 2012.

Decliners:

Geron Corp. (GERN: Quote) is plunging 24 percent to $1.12 based on the news that it has discontinued the development of GRN1005, its peptide-drug conjugate designed to treat cancers in the brain. The company also announced a restructuring to reduce its workforce from 107 positions to 64 full-time positions. In addition, the company’s finance chief Graham Cooper will be leaving the company to pursue other opportunities.

MetroPCS Communications, Inc. (PCS: Quote) is falling nearly 6 percent to $10.15.

Vail Resorts, Inc. (MTN: Quote) is falling over 6 percent to $51.77. The company’s first quarter net loss widened from the previous year period and was bigger than what analysts’ had estimated. Meanwhile, the company said it believes that it will be more difficult to achieve its fiscal 2013 Resort Reported EBITDA growth guidance that it anticipated in September.

Pep Boys – Manny, Moe & Jack (PBY: Quote) is down 6 percent to $10.06. The company slipped to a loss in its third quarter. Sales for the quarter decreased 2.4 percent, while comparable sales declined 2.7 percent.

Trading halt:

Trading in shares of Young Innovations Inc. (YDNT: Quote) was halted. The company agreed to be acquired by Linden Capital Partners for $39.50 per share or $314 million.
