J.J. Abrams reportedly turned down an offer to direct the upcoming film “Star Wars: Episode VIII.” Speaking with the U.K.’s Empire Magazine the “Star Trek Into Darkness” helmer explained that his loyalty is with the other major space franchise.
“There were the very early conversations and I quickly said that because of my loyalty to Star Trek,” Abrams said. “And also just being a fan, I wouldn’t even want to be involved in the next version of those things.”
Abrams has previously admitted he was a much bigger “Star Wars” fan growing up than “Star Trek” fan. That may have even informed his decision to pass the job up:
“I declined any involvement very early on. I’d rather be in the audience not knowing what was coming, rather than being involved in the minutiae of making them,” Abrams told Empire.
