Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, had her first royal portrait unveiled at the National Portrait Gallery in London on Friday (January 11).
The picture, painted by Paul Emsley, features a close up of Middleton’s face against a black background. Her wan smile is framed by long flowing locks of hair.
Critics were quick to disparage the portrait with the Sunday Times’ Waldemar Januszczak calling it “pretty ordinary . . . He made her look older than she is and her eyes don’t sparkle in the way that they do and there’s something rather dour about the face.”
Robin Simon of the British Art Journal, meanwhile, said “fortunately, the Duchess of Cambridge looks nothing like this in real life.”
Middleton, however, is said to be “thrilled” with the likeness.
