Samsung has announced that sales of its Galaxy S Series surpassed 100 million units as of January 13, 2013.
The series consist of the Samsung Galaxy S, Galaxy SII and the Galaxy SIII. The original Galaxy S smartphone, which launched in June 2010, has sold some 24 million units to date, with 10 million purchased during the first seven months of launch, said the South Korean electronics giant.
Apple’s iPhone was the unquestioned ruler of the smartphone market ever since its debut in 2007. However, 2012 turned out to be a tough year for its prized phone. Samsung, by offering high quality devices at a wide range of price points, captured the worldwide smartphone market quickly and pushed Apple to the second place. Samsung’s SIII proved to be a solid rival against the iPhone5’s near perfect software-hardware integration and sleek design, while the South Korean company’s cheaper phones found millions of takers at lower price points.
Samsung had launched the Galaxy S II in April 2011. It reached around 40 million shipments, achieving 10 million global channel sales in a span of just five months. And then came the iPhone killer in May 2012, Samsung unveiled the Galaxy S III. With its revolutionary user experience, the device achieved 20 million global channel sales in just 100 days, making it Samsung’s fastest selling smartphone. The company said the Galaxy S III has now passed the mark of 40 million unit channel sales.
Despite having a bad year in international courts with Apple suing it left, right and center, Samsung has performed admirably.
