Research in Motion or RIM, has received 15,000 app submission for its Blackberry 10 store in 37.5 hours, according to a tweet by Alec Saunders, vice president of developer relations. The results were possible thanks to two events called as ‘portathons’, that the company organized over the weekend.
He tweeted: “Well there you have it. 37.5 hours in, we hit 15,000 apps for this portathon. Feel like I’ve run a marathon. Thanks to all the devs!”
While one event was focused on the Blackberry 10 community, the other was Android developer- centric. Developers in both events were encouraged to make their existing applications available for Blackberry 10 operating system.
This is not the first time that the company is organizing such events. In 2012, RIM offered developers cash for those who submitted one app, Blackberry playbooks for those who came up with two to five apps, BB10 Dev Alpha devices for five and above, and trips to developer conferences for those who submitted ten apps or more. Microsoft recently announced a contest wherein the winning developers’ app would be featured in a Windows Phone prime-time TV ad in the U.S.
Despite the big numbers, RIM will not be approving all these submissions and it is likely that some of them will not make it to the App store. Nevertheless, this is a big achievement for the company, and an indication that it is going all out to support its Blackverry 10 operating system, which will be released at the end of this month. The company has been working on the OS for sometime now and believes that BB10 will be a strong contender against iOS and Android operating mobile operating systems.
RIM might not have as many apps as Google’s app store or Apple’s(775,000 applications according to CNET), but it promises to grow in the years to come. Will 2013 be the year of Blackberry?
