Consumer confidence in Belgium improved for the first time in four months in January, but remained at a very low level, survey data released by the National Bank of Belgium showed Friday.
The consumer confidence index rose to -23 from -25 in December. Sentiment improved as consumers were a little less gloomy in their assessment of economic prospects. The economic expectations index rose to -23 from -27.
Households were also less pessimistic regarding their financial situation and the relevant index edged up to -3 from -5. They also felt better regarding their savings ability and the measure climbed to -7 from -10.
However, consumers’ fears regarding unemployment began rising again in January, after an easing in the previous month. The corresponding index rose to 59 from 57.
