Pauline Phillips, the journalist behind the long-running advice column “Dear Abby,” has died at the age of 96. Phillips suffered from Alzheimer’s disease for years before her death and died on Wednesday in Minneapolis.
She began her popular column in 1956 writing under the name Abigail Van Buren. He daughter broke the news saying:
“She’ll be terribly missed by the people who love her. She’ll always be in my heart. She had an irreverent sense of humor. She left an amazing legacy,” daughter Jeanne Phillips tells PEOPLE. “I’m honored that she trusted me enough to let me continue her column for her. I feel very empty today. It’s a very sad day.”
Her identical twin sister Esther “Eppie” Lederer, also wrote a popular advice column under the name Anne Landers.
