A federal judge in Utah heard arguments in a lawsuit filed by the Brown family, stars of the reality series “Sister Wives.” The family recently left their home city of Salt Lake City, Utah after they were threatened with legal action over their plural marriages.
The Browns were quick to file a lawsuit calling Utah’s strict anti-polygamy laws unconstitutional. The suit challenges the laws constitutionality in light of due process and freedom of association.
U.S. District Judge Clark Waddoups issued no official ruling on the case but heard arguments about the merits of the law both from state attorneys and the Browns’ lawyers.
“The Browns wanted to show people that a plural family is not a monstrosity,” said Jonathan Turley of The George Washington University. “They don’t commit collateral problems. The state is saying if you didn’t do this TV show, you wouldn’t have a problem,” he said.
“They have a right to free speech and are being prosecuted for it.”
