Plaza Joe Strummer, a square in the Spanish city of Grenada, has been re-named after the late Clash fronter, Joe Strummer. The plaza came to get the unique name through a Facebook petition, which built up steam and was approved by city legislators this week.
Speaking with the Guardian, a city hall spokeswoman said the popular demand for the name change was overwhelming:
“A square has been identified and now the proposal has to be approved by the committee of honors and distinctions. There was a popular petition for this to happen and the city hall accepted it.”
Strummer, who passed over ten years ago, had several connections to the city, including a mention in the Clash classic, “Spanish Bombs.” The track is about the Spanish Civil War.
