Italy’s consumer confidence deteriorated in January, with confidence in both the current and future economic situations weakening, contrary to economists’ forecast for a modest overall improvement, latest data showed Monday.
The consumer confidence index, on an unadjusted basis, decreased to 84.6 in January from 85.7 in December, statistical office Istat said. Economists were looking for a reading of 86.1. In November and October, the readings were 84.8 and 86.2, respectively.
The sub-indicator that measures households’ perception of Italy’s overall economic climate edged down to 72.7 from the previous month’s reading of 72.9.
At the same time, consumers’ views of their personal finances turned downbeat during the month, with the corresponding sub-indicator dropping to 89.3 from 90.7.
Italian households’ views of the overall current situation was less upbeat in December compared to the previous month. The indicator fell to 90.9 from 91.4. The measure of consumers expectations for the future economic condition declined to 77.1 from 78, data showed.
