GM To Invest $600 Mln In Fairfax Assembly Center

Automaker General Motors Co.’s (GM: Quote) Chairman and CEO Dan Akerson Monday announced a $600 million investment to expand and upgrade the Fairfax Assembly Center in Kansas City, where the Chevrolet Malibu and Buick LaCrosse are produced.

Speaking to workers and government leaders at the center on Monday, Akerson said the $600 million represents one of the largest plant investments in the history of the company.

The latest investment brings GM’s total investment in Fairfax to over $2.5 billion over the last decade.

When construction is completed in two years, the plant will expand more than 15 percent to 3.7 million square feet.

A new 450,000 square-foot state-of the-art paint shop also will be built to deliver flawless finish and optimal corrosion protection, while consuming less energy and water. GM will also install a new stamping press and make several other upgrades.

GM closed down 0.8 percent on Monday at $28.83.
