Poll Shows Alaska Sen. Begich Poised For Re-election

Although the 2014 elections are still almost two years away, the results of a Public Policy Polling survey released Thursday show that Alaska Senator Mark Begich, D-Ak., is in good shape to be re-elected to a second term.

The poll showed that 49 percent of Alaska voters approve of Begich’s job performance, while 39 percent disapprove. Begich benefits from a 54 percent to 32 percent approval rating from independents in the Republican-leaning state.

Begich also leads against the Republicans who have most frequently been mentioned as possible challengers for him next year, PPP said.

PPP said Begich leads Anchorage Mayor Dan Sullivan 47 percent to 41 percent, Lieutenant Governor Mead Treadwell 47 percent to 39 percent and former Lieutenant Governor Loren Leman 50 percent to 40 percent.

Begich has even wider leads over former Governor and vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin and 2010 Republican nominee Joe Miller.

While the poll showed that Begich would be tied with Governor Sean Parnell at 48 percent, just 10 percent of Alaska voters said they want Parnell to make a Senate bid next year.

“Despite Alaska’s Republican tilt, Begich remains surprisingly popular going into his reelection campaign,” said Dean Debnam, President of Public Policy Polling.

The PPP survey of 1,129 Alaska voters was conducted from February 4th through 5th and has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.9 percentage points.
