The world must send a message to Iran with a strong response to North Korea’s nuclear tests, Secretary of State John Kerry told reporters in Washington, DC on Wednesday.
North Korea defied United Nations resolutions by carrying out its fourth nuclear test earlier this week.
The provocation evoked strong condemnation from most members of the international community, including Pyongyang’s immediate neighbors South Korea and Japan, the United States, the European Union, China and Russia.
The world must send a “swift, clear, strong and credible response” to North Korea, said Kerry, according to AP.
“Just as it’s impermissible for North Korea to pursue this kind of reckless effort, so we have said it’s impermissible with respect to Iran. What our response is with respect to this will have an impact on all other nonproliferation efforts.”
Iran on Tuesday confirmed it has converted some of its stockpile of 20-percent enriched uranium into fuel for a research reactor in Teheran.
Officials from the UN’s nuclear watchdog are in Teheran for talks related to Iran’s disputed nuclear program.
Ali Asghar Soltanieh, Iran’s envoy to the International Atomic Energy Agency, says the two sides have agreed on “some points” and would meet again, Iran’s Fars News Agency reported.
