LG Buys WebOS From HP To Use In Smart TVs

A year after HP’s WebOS operating system was declared a failure, the company has now sold the most of its rights over the mobile operating system to LG. The South Korean electronics giant will be using the OS in smart TVs that they will make in the future.

Through this deal, LG acquires the WebOS source code, related documentation, talent and all WebOS related sites, according to CNET. Apart from this, LG will also get HP licenses for use with its WebOS products and also the patents that HP picked up from Palm, who initially developed the OS.

It makes sense for LG to not use the OS on its phones. And so far, Google’s OS has been doing great things for LG’s phones in terms of sales. Therefore, the company sees no point in a second OS. The South Korean company also said recently that it has no plans to make Windows Phones either, since it does not see a significant market for them.

HP’s recent announcement of its new tablet, the android running Slate 7, is another blow to the WebOS system, which had potential, but was mismanaged by the company, leading to its failure.

Most experts expected WebOS to be buried following its failure. However, this deal is a consolation for mobile operating system, which might just be used in your next TV.
