Former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum has fired back at an atheist group that used his words on a set of billboards encouraging drivers to “Go Godless.”
The billboards appear in and around Austin, Texas, where the group will hold their 50th anniversary convention this year, according to philly.com.
The group used a quote pulled from a speech Santorum delivered as part of his presidential bid in which he said, “Our civil laws have to comport with a higher law–God’s law.”
According to philly.com, Santorum responded to the billboard via an email to his followers, writing, “I know, it is shocking. And you know what I said back to the American Atheists who purchased that billboard? Thank you.”
“Thank you for helping me publicly express my strong belief that we need to continue to be one nation under God,” he added. “And I think you would agree with that statement.”
Dave Muscato, a rep from American Atheists, also issued a press statement on the campaign saying, “In this country we have separation of church and state for very good reasons. We are not ‘one nation under god,’ but ‘one nation indivisible’.”
