Too Much Processed Meat Consumption Linked To Shorter Lifespan

Processed meats like bacon and deli meat could be even more dangerous to heart health than once thought, says a new study from researchers at Kings College, London. For the study the researchers reviewed health records from 450,000 people living in 10 EU nations.

They found that over all, three percent of all premature deaths could be linked directly to a diet high in processed meats. They also found those who consumed the most processed meats were at a 72 percent increased risk of developing heart disease and an 11 percent increased cancer risk.

According to Victoria Taylor of the British Heart Foundation, the news is startling:

“From a heart disease perspective, foods such as sausages, bacon, ham, salami and chorizo are usually high in salt and saturated fat. Eating too much saturated fat is linked to raised levels of bad cholesterol and too much salt [is linked] to high blood pressure, which contributes to your risk of heart disease.”
