President Barack Obama met with faith leaders on Friday to discuss immigration reform, according to a statement from the White House.
Leaders from the faith community expressed their concerns over the negative impact the immigration system is having on people throughout their congregations.
Among the diverse group of religious leaders were Imam Mohamed Magid, president of the Islamic Society of North America; Leith Anderson of the National Association of Evangelicals; Dieter Uchtdorf of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints; and Mark Hetfield of the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society.
The president discussed the plans he has put forward for reforming immigration, including that any bill must include a pathway to earned citizenship.
Obama’s plans also include measures to crack down on employers who play the system and exploit both American and immigrant workers.
Obama said that bipartisan support is improving among congressional Democrats and Republicans but urged the leaders to continue making immigration reform a priority on Capitol Hill.
