Indian Tablet Sales Surge

Tablet sales soared in India during the third and fourth quarters of 2012 according to new data from CyberMeida Research.

A total of 3.11 million units were shipped during the entire year, with 1.09 million tablets sold in the fourth quarter and 1.1 million during the third quarter.

These sales numbers were generated mainly by companies like Micromax and Karbon thanks to their low-budget range of tablets. Samsung and Apple also saw some powerful sales numbers. Apart from these heavy weights, 72 other vendors also shipped tablets in the country this year.

Being a low-budget market, it goes without saying that Android was the top selling operating system, with Apple and then Windows behind.

Even “phablets” with 5inch screens like the Galaxy Note 2 were counted as tablets owing to their large screen and powerful functioning. These numbers are a strong reminder that the country remains as a potential market for strong growth. However, Indian consumers are usually more keen on low-budget devices, not the expensive ones. Despite this, Apple and Samsung managed to haul in a good year with strong sales numbers in the country.
