John Boehner Says He Can’t Support Gay Marriage

After the change of heart that Ohio Republican Senator Rob Portman has had about gay marriage, House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner said that he does not feel the same way and could not imagine ever supporting it.

In an interview on ABC’s “This Week”, Boehner was asked if he thought he could ever change his stance on gay marriage, to which he replied, “I believe that marriage is the union of one man and one woman. It’s what I grew up with. It’s what I believe. It’s what my church teaches me. And I can’t imagine that position would ever change.”

Last week, Portman announced that following his college son’s coming out in 2011 he had changed his mind on gay marriage and was now in support of it.

“We conservatives believe in personal liberty and minimal government interference in people’s lives,” said Portman. “… One way to look at it is that gay couples’ desire to marry doesn’t amount to a threat but rather a tribute to marriage, and a potential source of renewed strength for the institution.”
