January 12, 2013 – Once the sequestration or agreed spending cuts kick in, I would expect to see a bigger reduction in Treasury supply. Some people, including my colleague Russ Winter, think that higher tax rates and lower spending will slow the economy and reduce tax collections. They are not expecting the increase in financial asset prices that I believe will occur as a result of Fed money pumping and any reduction in Treasury supply. This is the economic wild card that I believe will offset the impact of increased taxes and reduced government spending.
