Paramount’s (VIAB) high-concept horror-thriller “A Quiet Place” opened to a booming $50M from 3,508 theaters in North America, ahead of expectations. Rated PG-13, the pic directed by John Krasinski earned a B+ CinemaScore and sports a 97% Rotten Tomatoes score. Overseas, “A Quiet Place” opened to $21M from its first 40 markets for a global cume of $71M. BOX OFFICE RUNNERS-UP: Warner Bros. (TWX) “Ready Player One” came in second, with $25.1M in its sophomore outing for an 11-day domestic total of $96.9M. Behind it was Comcast (CMCSA, CMCSK) subsidiary Universal’s “Blockers,” opening to $21.4M from 3,379 North American cinemas, the best launch for an R-rated comedy since fellow Universal comedy “Girls Trip.” Disney (DIS) and Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther” placed number four in its eighth weekend, grossing another $8.4M for a domestic total of $665.4M. Rounding out the top five, Roadside Attractions and Lionsgate’s (LGF.A) “I Can Only Imagine” earned an estimated $8.36M. Other publicly traded companies in filmmaking include 21st Century Fox’s (FOXA), Viacom (VIA, VIAB) and Sony’s (SNE).
