The obesity issue is bursting at the seams all over the world.
In fact, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) obesity has tripled in size over the last 50 years. In 2016, they note, 1.9 billion adults were overweight around the world. Of those, 650 million were considered obese. Just in the U.S., nearly 34% of adults and up to 20% of children are obese. By 2030, almost half of U.S. adults will be considered obese.
However, a solution may be found in psychedelics such as psilocybin, which activates serotonin receptors, or “nature’s own appetite suppressant,” as noted by Psychology Today. “This powerful brain chemical curbs cravings and shuts off appetite. It makes you feel satisfied even if your stomach is not full. The result is eating less and losing weight.”
One of the companies researching its potential with obesity is NeonMind Biosciences Inc. (CSE: NEON), which is working with Dr. C. Laird Birmingham, a Specialist in Internal Medicine, an Epidemiologist and Biostatistician, and a Professor of Psychiatry at the University of British Columbia. He’ll consult with the company to develop protocols for its Phase 2 Clinical Trial administering psilocybin to treat obese patients.
Interesting to note, NeonMind just announced that its common shares are now trading on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange under the symbol “6UF”. As a result, NeonMind’s common shares are now cross-listed on the Canadian Securities Exchange and the FSE.
“Listing on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange will provide us an opportunity to grow our shareholder base throughout Europe and allow European investors to follow NeonMind’s development in the psychedelic drug industry and be a part of our growth,” said Penny White, Founder and CEO of NeonMind.
The Frankfurt Stock Exchange is one of the world’s largest trading centres for securities. With a share in turnover of around 90 per cent, it is the largest of Germany’s seven stock exchanges and it is an international trading centre, which is reflected in the structure of its participants. Of the approximately 200 market participants, roughly 50% are from countries other than Germany.
Psychedelics Could Create $100 Billion Opportunity
Much like the cannabis boom before it, psychedelics are quickly going mainstream.
For one, the U.S. FDA and the medical community is supportive of psychedelics research. Two, medical studies are finding that psychedelics can assist in the treatment of many health and mental issues impacting millions of people around the world. In addition, Eight Capital estimates the total market for mental health treatment could be valued at up to $100 billion.
Plus, other psychedelic companies, like Cybin Inc. (NEO:CYBN)(OTC:CLXPF), Tryp Therapeutics Inc. (CSE:TRYP), Mind Medicine Inc. (NEO:MMED)(OTC:MMEDF), and Compass Pathways (NASDAQ:CMPS) are finding benefits from psychedelics.
Cybin Inc., for example, just announced it entered into an agreement with neurotech pioneer HI, LLC dba Kernel”) to leverage its innovative technology, Kernel Flow (“Flow”), for its upcoming sponsored clinical work.
“Access to Kernel’s innovative Flow technology adds another exciting dimension to the investigative work that Cybin is doing to develop breakthrough treatments for mental health disorders such as depression and addiction. Currently, clinical investigators rely on limited subjective information from patients. The ability to collect quantitative data from our sponsored drug development programs is potentially game-changing in terms of our ability to measure where psychedelics work in the brain in real time, and how we ultimately design our future therapeutics,” stated Doug Drysdale, CEO of Cybin.
Tryp Therapeutics is focused on identifying compounds with well characterized safety and activity profiles that have potential utility in orphan diseases and other diseases with high unmet medical needs. That includes Psilocybin-for-Neuropsychiatric Disorders.
Mind Medicine Inc. just announced an innovative randomized placebo-controlled study evaluating the effects of daytime and evening administration of low doses of LSD on cognitive performance, sleep quality, mood, neuroplasticity markers, emotion regulation, quality of life, and immune system response.
The study will provide an additional research pathway for MindMed’s psychedelic Microdosing Division and will immediately integrate with MindMed’s plans in digital therapeutics through its newly formed Albert unit for digital medicine. The new study will be conducted in collaboration with Dr. Kim Kuypers of Maastricht University in the Netherlands, a global, leading authority on the micro-dosing of psychedelics.
Compass Pathways is even establishing its first Centre of Excellence in collaboration with The Sheppard Pratt Institute for Advanced Diagnostics and Therapeutics in Baltimore, Maryland, United States.
The Centre of Excellence will model the “clinic of the future”, showcasing the best thinking in science, therapy, technology, and design. Working as a research facility and innovation lab, it will generate evidence to shape therapy models in mental health care, train and certify therapists, conduct clinical trials including proof-of-concept studies, and prototype digital solutions to improve patient experience. The first wave of research will focus on COMPASS’s investigational COMP360 psilocybin therapy, which comprises administration of COMP360 psilocybin with psychological support from specially trained therapists.
