Chevron (CVX) CEO Mike Wirth and Exxon Mobil (XOM) CEO Darren Woods spoke shortly after the coronavirus pandemic took hold last year about combining the companies, Christopher Matthews, Emily Glazer and Cara Lombardo of Wall Street Journal report, citing people familiar with the talks. The discussions were described as preliminary and aren’t ongoing but could come back in the future, the sources added. One of the people familiar with the talks told the Journal that the sides may have missed an opportunity to consummate the deal under former President Donald Trump, whose administration was seen as more friendly to the oil industry.
