Winning Streak Rolls on for TSX

Equities towered above Monday’s closing levels as the session ended Tuesday, mostly

The TSX cooled off from earlier highs Tuesday, finishing 141.41 points, at 18,599.19

The Canadian dollar eked higher 0.12 cents to 79.11 cents U.S.

Health-care issues proved the halest of the bunch, with Aphria sprinting $2.48, or 12.1%, to $22.94, while Trillium Pharmaceuticals jumping 89 cents, or 7%, to $13.53.

Tech issues had something to cheer about, too, as Lightspeed POS triumphed $6.86, or 10%, to $75.50, while Absolute Software Corp. acquired $1.49, or 8.6%, to $18.77.

In the gold patch, Centerra Gold climbed 45 cents, or 3.7%, to $12.70, while New Gold Inc. moved ahead 11 cents, or 5.3%, to $2.19.

Only communications kept the market from pitching a shutout, as Rogers Communications sagged $1.79, or 3%, to $58.48, while Quebecor dipped seven cents to $33.82.

ON BAYSTREET

The TSX Venture Exchange gained 33.13 points, or 3.6%, to end Tuesday at 964.20

All but one of the 12 TSX subgroups were positive on the day, with health-care zooming 5.9%, information technology stronger 4.6%, and gold, ahead 2.6%.

The lone holdout was in communications, pointed downward 0.7%.

ON WALLSTREET

U.S. stocks jumped on Tuesday after a decline in bond yields ushered investors into the beaten-up technology sector.

The Dow Jones Industrials came off their highs of the day to finish up 30.3 points at 31,832.74

The S&P grabbed 54.09 points to close at 3,875.44.

The NASDAQ Composite roared higher 464.66 points, or 3.7%, to 13,073.83, for its best day since November. Tesla soared 19.6% after a five-day losing streak and posted for its biggest one-day pop since February 2020. Apple and Facebook jumped 4% each, while Microsoft and Netflix both gained at least 2.5%. Amazon rallied 3.8%.

Many popular technology stocks have fallen double digits over the past month amid rate fears. Apple has dropped 10% in the past month, while Tesla has tumbled more than 20%. Pandemic bets Zoom Video and Peloton have both fallen more than 20% during the same period.

Prices for 10-Year Treasurys recovered, weighing yields to 1.54% from Monday’s 1.61%. Treasury prices and yields move in opposite directions.

Oil prices docked $1.19 to $63.86 U.S. a barrel.

Gold prices brightened $35.00 to $1,713.00.
