Asia Mostly Falls, Australia Down 2%

Stocks in Asia-Pacific were mixed on Wednesday, with some markets in the region closed for holidays.

In Japan, the Nikkei 225 dropped 362.39 points, or 1.3%, to 28,044.45.

The Japanese yen traded at 109.03 per U.S. dollar following an earlier high of 108.82 against the greenback.

Markets in Hong Kong and Korea were shuttered for holiday.

In corporate developments, shares of Singapore Airlines were down 3.1% overnight, with the firm set to announce its full-year results later in the day.

The Australian dollar traded at $0.7771, higher than levels around $0.774 seen earlier this week.

In other markets

In Shanghai, the CSI 300 faded 15.33 points, or 0.3%, to 5,172.27.

In Singapore, the Straits Times index backtracked 38.42 points, or 1.2%, to 3,104.21.

In Taiwan, the Taiex index deleted 13.32 points, or 0.1%, to 16,132.66

In New Zealand the NZX 50 dumped 147.11 points, or 1.2%, to 12,281.50

In Australia, the ASX 200 slipped 134.22 points, or 1.9%, to 6,931.66
