Air Canada And WestJet Rank Last In North America For Performance

Canada’s two national airlines rank last for on-time performance among 10 North American carriers, according to data from aviation analytics company Cirium.

The on-time performance report covers the month of February this year and shows that, among 10 North American airlines, privately held WestJet Airlines ranked 9th and Air Canada (AC) ranked last in 10th spot.

According to the data, only 63% of more than 13,000 flights flown by WestJet during February landed on time.

Air Canada’s performance was even worse, with only 57% of the nearly 27,000 flights it flew in February landing on time.

In contrast, U.S.-based Delta Airlines (DAL) had the best on-time performance among North American carriers, with 85% of the more than 119,000 flights flown in February landing on time.

American Airlines (AAL), the biggest carrier in the world, had 82% of the more than 151,000 flights it operated in February land on time.

The poor results in February were actually an improvement for both Air Canada and WestJet compared to their on-time performance throughout 2022.

Last year, WestJet had an on-time performance rate of 59%, while Air Canada’s on-time performance rate stood at 55%.

Nearly half of all airline flights in Canada during 2022 were late, delayed or cancelled. For their part, WestJet and Air Canada have said they are still recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Air Canada’s stock has declined 20% in the last 12 months to trade at $18.46 per share
