Vehicle sales pushed Canadian retail sales up 0.10 percent in June over the previous month, led by increases of new car dealers and other motor vehicle dealers. The print beat consensus expectations of 0.0 percent, however, once gas stations, fuel vendors and motor vehicle and parts dealers were excluded, core retail sales fell 0.9 percent for the month. Core retail sales were dragged down by general merchandise retailers and food and beverage retailers. Outside of motor vehicles, gas stations and sporting goods and miscellaneous retailers, the other subsectors fell for the month.
By province, Ontario led, followed by Quebec. British Columbia declined. Statistics Canada also provided and advance estimate of a 0.4 percent increase for July based on company surveys. Retail sales measure the change in the total value of inflation-adjusted sales at the retail level.
