‘AI’ Named Word Of The Year

The term %AI which is an acronym for artificial intelligence, has been named the 2023 “word of the year” by Collins Dictionary.

The dictionary publisher says that AI, or A.I. as it is also spelled, has dominated conversations in 2023, and that artificial intelligence has gripped humanity and concerns about our future.

With conversations about whether AI is a force for good or an apocalyptic technology dominating the news and conversations, Collins Dictionary named it the 2023 word of the year.

Collins said that an online search reveals that use of the term “AI” has quadrupled this year.

While other words such as “ultra-processed” and “Ulez” were also considered for word of the year honours, Collins Managing Director Alex Beecroft said that it is clear that AI has been “the talking point of 2023.”

The dictionary company said that AI “…has quickly become as ubiquitous and embedded in our lives as email, streaming, or any other once futuristic, now everyday technology.”

The market for artificial intelligence in the U.S. alone is expected to grow five-fold between now and 2032, reaching nearly $600 billion U.S. within a decade.
