If you do have some time to kill while you’re waiting for a movie to download or a piece of software to install, we recommend that you take stroll in the “Big Internet Museum” which opened its doors to the world last week.
Virtual museums have been around since the 2000’s, but this one promises to be special with its unique offering. ‘The Big Internet Museum’ claims to be the world’s first museum with a diverse collection completely dedicated to the Internet. It documents and displays the web’s most intriguing facts and information for current and future generations.
Dani Polak, Joep Drummen, and Joeri Bakker, three dutch advertising professionals, thought of the idea while stuck in traffic back in July. The internet has a strong history and culture, but the trio realized that no one was documenting these facts for future generations.
Visitors can go through its many wings, some of which are the Audio Visual, Social Media, Gaming, Technology. There is even a brilliant ‘Meme’ wing that documents the origin and trend line of the popular ‘culture spreading’ practice.
So what will you find in the virtual rooms of this new cyber structure? All kinds of information: the origin of the popular phrase “All your base are belong to us”, the history behind ‘MUD1’ – the first text-based fantasy game to support multiple users or Jennifer Kaye Ringley, the girl who broadcast her life over the Web, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to become the mother of reality television.
The website is not packed like Wikipedia. It is still adding entries and filling up sections at the moment. However, its smart presentation style, unique choice of topics and sleek design promise a fun-filled experience for any fan of the internet.
Like Wikipedia, the site hopes that high quality user submissions will help it grow.
