Dollar General To Open 635 New Stores, Create 6000 Jobs In 2013

Discount retailer Dollar General Corp. (DG: Quote) said Wednesday that it plans to add 635 new stores and create 6,000 new jobs in 2013.

The company noted that with the addition of these jobs in 2013, it will have created about 30,000 jobs in the last six years. Dollar General also plans to remodel or relocate 550 stores during the year.

Rick Dreiling, Dollar General’s chairman and CEO said, “Dollar General’s continued growth reflects our customers’ increasing satisfaction with our everyday low prices and convenience. Further, 2013 will mark another growth milestone as we plan to open the organization’s 11,000th store before the year’s end when we will begin our 75th anniversary in 2014.”

Dollar General also said it will participate in proactive hiring initiatives such as Paychecks for Patriots, demonstrating its commitment to an employee base including veterans.

The “Paychecks for Patriots” program helps resolve the challenges of unemployment facing veterans by equipping the military community with the resources to better access available job opportunities at companies.

In mid-November, Dollar General reported a profit for the third quarter that topped analysts’ estimates, as sales improved amid increased demand for candy and snacks as well as perishables offerings.

At that time, the company raised the lower end of its full-year earnings forecast while lowering the upper end of its sales target, citing a challenging competitive environment.

In Wednesday’s regular session, DG is trading at $44.91, down $0.06 or 0.13 percent on a volume of 1,770 shares.
