Advisors in Focus- December 11, 2020

It was an interesting week for the markets as we saw the S&P 500 test the 3700 psychological level. Buyers were hesitant at these levels which led to some profit taking late in the week. Sentiment suggests a near term bullish top that may need a few sessions of consolidation. The macro backdrop remained muddled as Capitol Hill fought over stimulus and budget bills. COVID figures continued to rise but Pfizer’s (PFE) vaccine received emergency use authorization from the FDA. Plenty of noise to provide distractions but, let us review stocks your clients were researching while these macro stories garnered the headlines.

  • Trivia Question- The oncology market covers every area of cancer and is one of the biggest sectors in the life science space. Can you name the oncology company that has the biggest market cap? (Answer Below)

It was a busy week on the IPO front with highly anticipated debuts by DoorDash (DASH) and Airbnb (ABNB). Both stocks surged above the IPO pricing range as investors flocked into the names. We were surprised that neither stock made its way on to Retail lists. Another IPO, C3.AI (AI), came in at #10 in the Top Stocks by Retail- Surge* Traffic list. The company, run by Silicon Valley legend Thomas Siebel, allows companies to develop, test and run full-scale, real-time enterprise AI applications. It priced 15.5 mln shares at $42 which was above the expected range of $31-34 and opened for trade at $100.

*- Surge data is based on the average traffic from the past two days compared to the average traffic from the previous market week.

IPOs were not the only area to garner attention by your clients as Biotechnology was a hot space. This week we saw an increased interest from retail clients around cancer treatment. The American Association for Cancer Research held its annual San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium (SABCS) under virtual conditions. The research studies announced by companies are critical in fighting this terrible disease. Retail was certainly focused on the announcements as the space produced some of this week’s biggest winners including:

  • Greenwich Lifescience (GLSI)– #3 in Top Stocks by Retail Total Traffic and #1 in Top Stocks by Retail Surge Traffic. The GP2 Phase III clinical trial design saw positive data from its trial. The stock has a miniscule float of 1.74 mln so it saw shares skyrocket from the $6 area to $150 in reaction to the news before cooling off and settling back down around $50 to end the week.
  • Immutep (IMMP)- #13 in Top Stocks by Retail Total Traffic and #2 in Top Stocks by retail Surge Traffic. Shares of the company tripled from $2.05 to  $7.95 after it announced positive results from a trial for its treatment for metastatic breast cancer. The float is larger than GLSI at 46 mln.  The stock has given up half of its gains to slip back to $3.60.
  • Curis (CRIS)- #9 in Top Stocks by Retail Total Traffic. CRIS shares rallied following an update from its ongoing Phase 1 study for the treatment of patients with relapsed or refractory non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Trivia Answer- NovoCure (NVCR) at $11.42 bln has the biggest market cap for pure-play oncology names. NVCR is a commercial-stage oncology company pioneering a novel therapy for solid tumors called Tumor Treating Fields. Other major oncology names include: Guardant Health (GH), Mirati Therapeutics (MRTX), Iovance Biotherapeutics (IOVA), Berkeley Lights (BLI), and Burning Rock Biotech (BNR).
