On The Fly: Top stock stories for Wednesday

Stocks opened in negative territory and from there the sellers took control and pushed the Nasdaq to losses of about 1%. The averages were able to pare their losses, but could not get back above the flat line. As a result, the Dow suffered its second loss in the last nine trading days and gave back roughly half of its gains from yesterday. Investors are bracing themselves for the next round of earnings reports as the reporting season hits peak volume this week. ECONOMIC EVENTS: In the U.S., durable goods orders rose 2.2% in September, which was better than forecast. The FHFA home price index increased 0.7% to 251.8 in August, beating forecasts. New home sales surged 18.9% to a 667,000 rate in September, which was much better than expected and represented the best rate since October 2007. COMPANY NEWS: Shares of Boeing (BA) dropped nearly 3% after the aircraft maker reported better than expected core earnings and revenue, backed its fiscal year revenue outlook and raised its core EPS view. Among this morning’s other Dow members that issued their quarterly reports, Coca-Cola (KO) closed fractionally lower and Visa (V) gained 1%… Shares of AT&T (T) fell 4% after the telecom giant reported lower than expected sales and earnings last night and maintained its full-year guidance… Meanwhile, Nike (NKE) shares rose 3% after the company’s investor day meeting, during which CEO Mark Parker said the company see sales growing in the high-single digits over the next five years, with earnings per share growth in the mid-teens percentage over that period. The company also discussed a new e-commerce partnership with Facebook’s (FB) Instagram and noted that it plans to shift away from multi-brand, “undifferentiated” retail over the next five years… In M&A news, the Wall Street Journal reported that Vistra Energy (VST) is in advanced talks to buy Dynegy (DYN). Shares of Dynegy surged 17% higher after the news. MAJOR MOVERS: Among the noteworthy gainers after reporting earnings were Akamai (AKAM), Anthem (ANTM), GrubHub (GRUB), and , which rallied a respective 4%, 5% and 11%. Among the notable losers after reporting earnings were Acadia Healthcare (ACHC), Chipotle (CMG), and AMD (AMD), which fell 26%, 15%, and 13.5%, respectively. INDEXES: The Dow fell 112.30, or 0.48%, to 23,329.46, the Nasdaq lost 34.54, or 0.52%, to 6,563.89, and the S&P 500 declined 11.98, or 0.47%, to 2,557.15.
