Stocks are having another volatile session, though the result at the moment is that the averages are not far from where they ended following yesterday’s selloff. The market began the session deep in negative territory, only to move back and forth across the flat line several times during the morning. Meanwhile, oil prices remain in negative territory, though the commodity is off its lows and back right beneath $64 a barrel. ECONOMIC EVENTS: In the U.S., the JOLTS report showed there were 5.81M job openings in December, versus the prior figure of 5.88M and the consensus forecast of 5.9M. COMPANY NEWS: Shares of General Motors (GM) advanced 3% after the automaker posted better than expected sales and profits in the fourth quarter and guided to FY18 EPS in the “mid-$6 range,” compared to the consensus forecast of $6.05 per share… Also reporting better than expected earnings was Allergan (AGN), thought the stock has slid about 2% near noon. The maker of Botox additionally reported that the first of two pivotal phase 3 clinical trials for its migraine attack therapy met its co-primary endpoints… Credit Suisse’s (CS) XIV ETN, an exchange traded note that functioned essentially as a bet against VIX volatility rising, was halted before the bank announced it is being liquidated following an “acceleration event” that triggered its demise. Credit Suisse said it expects to deliver an irrevocable call notice with respect to the event acceleration of XIV to The Depository Trust Company by no later than February 15. MAJOR MOVERS: Among the noteworthy gainers was Micron (MU), which rose 6.5% after the company boosted its second quarter guidance and announced that it named David Zinsner as chief financial officer. Also higher after reporting quarterly results were Fabrinet (FN), Oclaro (OCLR), and Lumentum (LITE), which gained a respective 23%, 19%, and 15%. Among the notable losers was 8point3 Energy (CAFD), which slipped 12% after it agreed to be acquired by Capital Dynamics for $977M in equity value. Also lower after reporting quarterly results were Vishay (VSH), Colfax (CFX), and Gartner (IT), which fell a respective 11%, 11%, and 8%. INDEXES: Near midday, the Dow was up 45.43, or 0.19%, to 24,391.18, the Nasdaq was up 3.20, or 0.05%, to 6,970.73, and the S&P 500 was down 5.34, or 0.2%, to 2,643.60.
