On The Fly: What to watch for in Micron’s earnings report

Micron (MU) is scheduled to report results of its fiscal second quarter after the market close on March 22, with a conference call scheduled for 4:30 pm ET. What to watch for: 1. GUIDANCE HIKE: On February 5, Micron raised its Q2 earnings per share view to $2.70-$2.75 from $2.51-$2.65 and raised its revenue guidance to $7.2B-$7.35B from $6.8B-$7.2B. A the time, analysts expected the company to report Q2 EPS of $2.57 on revenue of $7.02B, but those figures have since risen to $2.74 from $7.28B. The same day, Micron said it appointed David Zinsner as its senior vice president and chief financial officer, succeeding a retiring Erie Maddock. 2. NOMURA, EVERCORE BOOST PRICE TARGETS: On March 12, two analysts raised their price targets on Micron, citing memory market changes and potential capital returns. Nomura Instinet analyst Romit Shah raised his price target on the shares to $100 from $55, saying that the shares were in the “early stages of another major breakout” after consolidating over the previous four months. Shah added that he saw key catalysts for Micron, including a resumption of an upward trend in dynamic random-access memory pricing in the second quarter, a first-time dividend and share buyback announcement in May, continued margin expansion in NAND and increased merger and acquisition discussions. The same day, Evercore ISI analyst C.J. Muse raised his price target on Micron to $80 from $60, saying he believes the memory market is “absolutely” different now with the DRAM industry consolidated to three players, all of whom are acting rational, and memory has become increasingly critical while the rising complexity has limited the magnitude of new supply. 3. KEYBANC NOTE: Following President Trump’s order to block Broadcom’s (AVGO) proposed acquisition of Qualcomm (QCOM), KeyBanc analyst John Vinh said in a note to investors that he expects Broadcom to remain acquisitive and thinks Micron could be another potential target, citing a lack of security concerns and Broadcom’s previous attempts to bid for Toshiba (TOSBF, TOSYY). 4. PC SHIPMENTS: Global shipments of traditional PCs totaled 70.6M units in the fourth quarter of 2017, recording slightly positive year-on-yera growth, the International Data Corporation said in January. The results outperformed the forecast of a 1.7% decline in shipments during the quarter, IDC noted. Micron makes components for PCs.
