As you celebrate Fourth of July this weekend, you might use an empty Coca-Cola (a top patriotic brand?) to launch your bottle rockets. If so, pay attention. Because, as with just about everything else, you’ll pay more for fireworks this year. Believe it or not, there’s a professor out of Boston University who actually studies the fireworks industry. Jay L. Zagorsky. According to Zagorsky’s data, fireworks imports have started 2022 at a record clip:
Source: The Conversation Through April of this year, the US has imported 185 million pounds of fireworks from China, up 27% over 2021’s record pace. No surprise, but China supplies 87% of the world’s fireworks. As for cost, there isn’t consumer level data, however Zagorsky says importers paid about 15% more for fireworks through the first four months of this year than they did last. He expects retailers to pass these increased costs onto consumers. Whatever you do, be careful.

Each year, Brand Keys conducts a survey of US consumers – controlling for political beliefs (!) – to determine the companies Americans consider most patriotic. Their work yields interesting insights. The Investment Perspective The Juice had to make a judgment call. Two actually. While American consumers consider Jeep, the most patriotic brand, its parent company doesn’t quite qualify as wholly American. In 2021, Italian-American company, Fiat Chrysler (who makes Jeep) merged with the French PSA Group to form Stellantis (STLA). Stellantis is based in Amsterdam and produces brands iconic in other countries, therefore we didn’t include it on our Trackstar results. However, The Juice did include Molson Coors (TAP), given its Chicago headquarters. Plus, show us an American spitting distance of Canada who doesn’t love an ice cold Molson Canadian. We also ranked them in order of most patriotic, not search interest. With these disclaimers, the top 10 most patriotic brands of 2022, including Jeep, followed by year-to-date investment performance, not including Stellantis.

Four of the companies in this year’s top ten also ranked that high on the 2002 list – Jeep (#1), Coca-Cola (#3), Levi Strauss (#4), and Walmart (#8). Gone from the top ten are Gillette (the best a man can get!), Marlboro (lol!), Zippo (lol again!), Colgate, Kodak, and Hershey’s. You can see the entire top 50 list here. Three of the six names no longer in the top ten – Gillette, Kodak, and Hershey’s – still show up in the top 50. The Bottom Line: Of the top ten most patriotic brands, two are on another list. A list coveted by investors. The dividend aristocrats list, which contains companies that have increased their dividend payments, every year, for at least the last 25 years. They are Coca-Cola (60 years) and Walmart (49 years). Give Apple some time and it’ll probably wind up a dividend aristocrat as well. The company’s currently in the midst of a 10-year streak. Heading into this holiday weekend, which, if you plan to travel (or gather with in-laws) could be stressful, we wanted to lighten the mood by talking about fireworks (be safe) and patriotism.
