%Apple ($AAPL) has reportedly parted ways with Jony Ive, its former design chief who helped to develop popular consumer devices ranging from the iPhone to the MacBook computer.
The New York Times newspaper is reporting that Ive and Apple have agreed to stop working together. The move comes as a shock given Ive’s long association with Apple and his influence at the company.
Ive is widely credited with helping to save Apple from bankruptcy in the 1990s and turning it into the world’s leading consumer electronics company. Ive worked closely with Apple co-founder Steve Jobs on many Apple products, including the original iPod and iMac computer.
Three years ago, Ive formed his own design firm called %LoveFrom but continued to work for Apple on its consumer electronic products as an outside consultant. Ive was reported to have a $100 million U.S. deal in place with Apple.
Ive is known for spearheading the design and functionality of many of today’s most popular electronic devices, including helping to create the touchscreens on iPhones and wireless headphones that are used with Apple products.
Apple stock is down 20% year-to-date at $145.49 U.S. per share.
