Privately held %ArtificialIntelligence (A.I.) company %OpenAI has outlined new rules to address safety concerns related to its chatbots that include ChatGPT and GPT-4.
Under the new safety framework, OpenAI will only deploy new technologies if they are deemed to be safe by the company’s board of directors.
The company is also creating an advisory group to review safety reports and send them to the executive leadership team and board members.
While executives will make decisions, OpenAI’s board has the power to reverse those decisions, said the company.
Since ChatGPT’s launch in November 2022, the potential dangers of A.I. have been top of mind for researchers, regulators, and the public.
Generative A.I. technologies have impressed consumers with their ability to write code and essays, but also sparked safety concerns over their potential to spread disinformation.
There are also concerns that A.I. will replace human workers and cause mass unemployment.
Earlier this year, a group of technology leaders signed an open letter calling for a six-month pause in developing systems more powerful than the GPT-4 chatbot, citing risks to society and human beings.
The new A.I. safety plan from OpenAI comes weeks after the company endured an internal battle that saw the temporary displacement of chief executive officer (CEO) Sam Altman and ultimately led to the board being overhauled.
Bret Taylor, the former co-CEO of %Salesforce (NYSE: CRM), has taken over as the new chair of OpenAI’s board of directors.
OpenAI is a private company, and its stock does not trade on a public exchange.
